Understanding what causes elevated fraud scores and how to configure proxies to avoid them is essential for any operation that relies on proxy infrastructure to access commercial platforms.

What Fraud Score Systems Actually Measure

Fraud scoring tools like IPQS, Sift, MaxMind, and similar services assign risk scores to IP addresses and sessions based on multiple signals:

IP reputation history: Has this IP been associated with spam, credential stuffing, scraping abuse, or other flagged activity? Shared proxy pools with high concurrent use are more likely to include IPs that have accumulated negative history.

Proxy Types and Their Fraud Score Profiles

Datacenter proxies carry the highest baseline fraud scores. Most fraud scoring systems maintain lists of data-center IP ranges and assign elevated risk scores to traffic from those ranges automatically. For workflows where fraud score accuracy matters — ad verification, affiliate tracking, account access — datacenter proxies are rarely appropriate.

Shared residential proxies drawn from rotating pools can have variable fraud scores depending on how heavily individual IPs have been used and whether any have been flagged for prior abuse. In a large, well-managed residential pool, most IPs will score cleanly. In a lower-quality pool with limited IP diversity, flagged addresses will appear more frequently.

The baseline score difference between residential and datacenter IPs is significant enough to affect access on many platforms.

Maintain consistent session signals

A session that changes IP mid-flow, inconsistently sets language or timezone headers, or behaves mechanically will accumulate behavioral fraud signals even if the IP itself is clean. Keep browser headers, language settings, and timezone consistent within a session, and set them to match the claimed geographic origin.

Avoid high concurrency on shared IPs

Running very high concurrency through a rotating pool means the same IPs appear in many sessions in a short window. Even on a well-maintained residential pool, excessive concurrent use of individual IPs can elevate their fraud scores. Match concurrency to pool depth.

Test IP scores before committing to a workflow

Several fraud scoring APIs offer free lookups. Before running a workflow on a specific proxy endpoint, test a sample of IPs from the pool against the scoring service your target uses. Identify and exclude IPs that already carry elevated scores.

Rotate on fraud score signals, not just on schedule

Build logic into your workflows to detect when a response indicates fraud-score-based filtering — unusual redirect chains, challenge pages, or blocked form submissions. Rotate the session IP when these signals appear, rather than waiting for a scheduled rotation.
